Ideal Posture

At ROCK Exeter, we emphasise optimal posture and spinal alignment as this is key to achieving optimal health. We use posture and radiographic analysis procedures that have been shown to be reliable and valid.

Ideal postural alignment from the side should have the centre of mass of the skull, thorax and pelvis in a vertical line with respect to gravity.
Ideal postural alignment from the front should have the spinal column vertically aligned - a straight column with respect to gravity.

From the side the spine has three primary curvature:

1 - Neck Curve - Cervical lordosis
2 - Ribcage Curve - Thoracic kyphosis
3 - Low Back Curve - Lumbar lordosis

The spine has its' specific balance that it should maintain. Poor posture, poor ergonomic, car crashes, falls and lifting injuries can all upset this balance. This can lead to spinal misalignment and loss of normal spinal curvature meaning abnormal and detrimental forces on the postural muscles, spinal ligaments and discs, nerves, bones and even the internal organs in the chest and abdominal cavities.
